Another Pool Match (Sept. 2016)

Day 40 (part 2) Another pool match.

This week it’s a real match. I go along, as driver and for the bants…. I’m even persuaded to have a game. Which I lost – but the match was already won by that stage, so no big deal.

Mrs MIT, dreadlocked and dangerous, warming up at the table…. and my orange and ginger beer concoction in the foreground

Pool

I was asked by one team member, D : “so, you don’t drink even one when you’re driving?”

I replied : “no, I don’t drink at all, any more.”

“Since when?”

“for almost six weeks now…. and no plans to start again”

Nods of understanding, or something of that nature, from him and M, his wife.

(incidentally, the only person I know In Real Life who knows of this blog is their daughter, who I trust and respect enormously, which is why she’s the only person I’ve dared tell)

I said that I’d recently decided I’d had enough, and wanted the simplicity of not having to calculate how much I was drinking, or if I could drive etc. They seemed to understand completely. Brief nods of understanding from others around the table, but no real discussion. This is the first time I’ve mentioned my not drinking to this bunch of mates, and no-one really cared. They seemed happy just to see me back among them, playing pool.

Another good night out, even though the team celebrated the victory with Laphroaig single malts….I clinked glasses with them and drained the last of my ginger beer instead.

I dropped M and D off on the way home. Led Zeppelin blaring on the car stereo. Nice drive home – one of the good things of not drinking – the drive home without any worry.

The memory of a pleasant night out without the risk of forgetting it in a hungover blur tomorrow.
